Works to Trees (CA)
Oakington and Westwick CP
The Vicarage, 99, Water Lane, Oakington And Westwick, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, CB24 3AL
Beech tree - remove dead wood, crown thin by 10%, selectively reduce end weight on suspect limbs and branches by thinning by an extra 10-20%. Remove crossing branches where possible. The tree is close to the front corner of The Vicarage approximately 2.5m from the North West corner of the building. It is approximately 25m in height and has a stem diameter of 1.1 - 1.3m. The stem leans slightly towards the North West corner of the house but the majority of the crown development is over the churchyard. At 4m there is a large heavy limb to the North. At approximately 11m, there is a wound where the limb forks out. Decay is present at this wound. There is another wound with decay present at approximately 13m. This is on the main stem at another union. In addition, there are a number of crossing branches within the crown. Some dead wood is present but surprisingly not much of any great size. There is no evidence of fungal fruiting bodies at the base. Given the wounds, proximity to the house (and public footpath / grave yard) I would be inclined to recommend some work to reduce the chance of failure. Many types of tree respond well to crown reductions but unfortunately Beech do not. A combination of end weight reduction to heavy or compromised limbs and a moderate heavy to heavy thin of upright stems and limbs will be required. This will not completely eliminate the risk of failure but will greatly reduce the chances, especially of heavy timber breaking. The overall crown would be slightly smaller on completion of the work and considerably less dense so allowing wind penetration. The tree would not alter much in height and would still retain a natural outline
